On set in Washington DC

Airport shoots are always interesting. Security is obviously tight. Real passengers on a mission to navigate through the airport can be troublesome. Plenty of rules to follow and lets not forget that when we move all this gear to the terminal, it all has to go through TSA just the same as if we were flying.

We keep the kit light for these very reasons as we make our trek from the check-in lines through TSA to the club and then over to the gate. Production is tight on these jobs for a good reason; there’s no time for inefficiency when you’re working in a live location (especially an airport.)

The kit was basically a Run Around kit but we added the cart to the mix to help navigate the long walks between shooting areas. Sony A7rIV tethered to an MBP M4 with 30’ of tether cable. Casting a signal to a 16” OLED display on wheels for client and photographer review keeps me out of the way but just within earshot.

Selects are trickling in for post production. Looking forward to receiving the rest

A Few Days in Central Ohio

On set in Columbus. Several locals, a few West Coast, one East Coast, one from across the pond, and several inspiring subjects make for a great group of people to work with.

I might start calling this one The Extra Common kit. Same fixings as The Common Kit but we add wireless connectivity and up the remote iPad to a 16” OLED. M4 running the show tethered to a Phase One iq250 on a Hasselblad body. 27” NEC display on the cart, 24” NEC display on wheels with a wireless hdmi receiver, and a 16” OLED with a wireless hdmi receiver.

1st Job of 2026: On set with Aaron Conway

Kicking off 2026 with a couple days on location and one day in studio. Can’t wait to see the client selects so I can get started on the back end of this job.

I find it best to be flexible with the kit fixings. This shoot required all the normal things with the ability to break away from the cart for a couple shots. Keeping the transmission to client monitors wireless allowed me to jump off the cart onto a tripod. Having an extra 15’ of USB-C to USB-C keeps the shoot moving rather then waiting for the cart to maneuver in tight spaces. Having a battery on the cart instead of relying on house power makes moving easy when the space allows for it. Don’t forget to throw an iPad in the bag; it might be easier to break that out in a pinch rather then grabbing the larger monitor and running power to it.

Stay flexible and be nimble. You’re there to support the shoot not slow it down.

10 Years Ago: Assisting for Justin Stephens

10 years ago I had the opportunity to assist on a job photographed by Justin Stephens while he captured key art and gallery images for Season 3 of WGN’s, Salem. Until I found this Key Art Reveal video, I had almost entirely forgot about the actual shoot day. All of my memories from this shoot are from the pre-light. I’m not sure if I ever even saw the final images until I came across the photo of me on the set.

Runners for Toyota shot by Jonny Miller

Here are a few of my favorite running shots taken by Jonny Miller on a shoot highlighting the Toyota and Vail Resorts partnership. Can we skip winter this year? I’m ready for spring.

For these images the photographer is strapped into the back of the “camera car’s” trunk or truck bed. I sit shotgun with a laptop on external battery power, running a tether cable through the car to reach the camera. I put an iPad mini in back for Jonny to review at the turn arounds. When hotspots and cell service are available I’ll put another iPad near the turn around and set up a Capture One Live Session so the client can see what we are capturing as we drive down the road.

There is a ton of coordination and communication between everyone involved to achieve these types of shots. It’s important for me to having everything running smoothly and the client able to easily review in order to insure we got the shot and can get off the road without making excessive passes back and forth which could hold up traffic.

Hangaring Out... waiting our turn

Hanging out in the hangar wrangling some video files while I wait my turn to jump on the Run Around kit for some stills. M3 tethered to a Sony “something” casting a signal out of the plane so the client can enjoy the breeze and extra leg room.
